Bike to Work Week!

Every year as a part of Bike Month people all over the nation commit to trading their car key for a helmet to celebrate biking for transportation in the nationwide Bike to Work Week event. Throughout this week their are a handful of events taking place, including Bike to Work Day where four pit stops around Raleigh will be set up with snacks and goodies! Below we will detail the events taking place and give you tips on how you can make biking to work an option no matter where you live!

May 16th: Bike/Walk/Bus Listening Session
Come to the Chavis Community Center from 6-8PM to talk with transportation staff about ways to improve biking, walking, or riding the bus in Raleigh. If you have ideas to improve safety or mobility, this is your chance to make your voice heard! Raleigh's department of transportation is interested in hearing what matters most to those who use multi-modal transportation as opposed to getting behind the wheel. This is also your chance to hear about the City's ongoing andTHe upcoming work.
May 17th: Ride of Silence
The Ride of Silence is a silent ride to honor those who have been injured or killed by while bicycling on public roads. This is also meant to raise awareness for bicyclists and their legal right to share the road. Cyclists are to act just as vehicles when riding in the road. Raleigh is working towards creating a culture for cycling to help more people feel comfortable choosing to bike instead of drive. This ride starts in Barbour Street in Dorothea Dix Park and will take place from 7-8PM.
May 19th: Bike to Work Day
If biking to work each day is not an option, maybe just one day could be an option. BikeRaleigh has organized 4 pit-stops located around the triangle at the following locations:
- Intersection of the Crabtree Creek Greenway and the Mine Creek Greenway
- Intersection of the Reedy Creek Greenway and the House Creek Greenway
- The Belltower
- Moore Square
At each of these stops there will be snacks and goodies to get you through your ride.
May 20th: Dorothea Dix Ride
Join Raleigh's Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Resources Department staff on a ride through Dorothea Dix Park. Explore the city's extensive greenway system with the low-key 7 mile ride starting and ending at Eliza Pool Park (1600 Fayetteville Street, Raleigh NC 27603). This ride will begin by traveling along the Walnut Creek Trail bringing cyclists to Centennial Campus. From here they will travel into Dorothea Dix where they will take a break before hoping on the Rocky Branch Trail to return to Eliza Pool Park. Ages 10+ are invited to join so pack up the family and bring your bikes and helmets! Ride starts at 8:30 and will last 1.5-2 hours. Participants must preregister so click the link below to get your name on the list. (this ride is free and open to the public)
How Can You Bike To Work?
If you have a long commute don't worry there is still hope! Just like many people do in big cities to catch a bus or train, you can always park and ride. Find a safe place that you can park your car and ride from so that you can also participate in alternative commuting. If there is a bus route near you, many of the buses now have bike racks you can attach your bike to. With this option you can either bike to a stop and finish your route by bus our ride the bus to a safe place that you can finish you ride from. In the evening you follow the same route back and viola, you have successfully biked to work! If you are just unsure of what route to take there are several resources at your disposal.
